Spectrum problems are bound to show up at the worst possible time taking out your cable TV, Internet or home phone. Let’s go through some common Spectrum issues and their fixes so that you don’t have to waste time on the phone or wait for a repair person to come within four hours while you are at work.
Since Spectrum and Time Warner Cable now fall under the same company, these fixes will work for both.
You might have to start looking for cord cutting options if your Spectrum problems are persistent. While Spectrum TV streaming might sound tempting to you, it’s better to go for services like Sling or Direct TV Now. You can also choose to switch to Direct TV.
This is what needs to be done if your TV doesn’t work or you can’t connect your gaming console or mobile devices like the iPad to your internet.
Many common Spectrum problems like an internet outage or what appears to be a broken DVR can be solved by you with small actions. This allows you to avoid of calling for help unless it is actually required.
Let’s look at how most Spectrum problems can be solved by you and how you can get support quickly if you’re unable to fix them on your own.
You have to call the same number for Spectrum problems that you’ve always used while you were a Time Warner Cable customer. Call 1 (800) 892-4357 for support if you were a Time Warner Cable subscriber previously.
Spectrum problems and fixes are same as that of Time Warner Cable since the only thing that has changed is the name.
Fixes for Spectrum Cable Problems
A Spectrum outage can’t be fixed using these steps. Occasionally Spectrum and Time Warner Cable outages happen because of an electrical problem, bad weather or other major issues close by.
DownDetector is a tool that can be used to see if others are also facing Spectrum problems in your area, or you may have to call in for support. The automated phone answering system will usually tell you when there is a problem in your area if you call Spectrum.
You can try these fixes for Spectrum and Time Warner Cable problems before calling because you can easily fix many problems in less than five minutes.
Internet Problems on Spectrum Cable
You can’t connect your tablets or computers to the internet if your Spectrum Internet is down. In such scenarios, some of the modem lights (mostly data lights) will not work.
If things are working as usual you will see a solid light for online, a solid light for power and blinking or solid lights for Upstream/Downstream or Send and Receive depending on the model. There is an issue if the lights appear to be different. This may indicate an outage or a problem specific to you.
Resetting the modem is the first fix for many Spectrum probelms. Remove the power cable from the modem for at least one minute and then plug it back in. It will connect most of the times without doing anything else. Also, be sure to check that the wires are properly connected.
You should also check that your router, which has antennas and is usually kept next to the modem, is showing a green light for Internet. If it is showing an orange light then there is no internet connection. Restart the router by removing the power cable for at least one minute.
Unplug your router if you want to use internet on your phone while Spectrum is down or simply turn off WiFi on your phone till the problem is being fixed by Spectrum.
You may have to schedule a service if your Spectrum Internet problems are not fixed by unplugging. You can also get in touch with Spectrum support online by using the details mentioned at the end of this guide.
Spectrum Phone Related Issues
There are times when Spectrum home phone doesn’t work for many users. While an internet outage is also responsible for home phone being down many times, it can be down on its own as well.
If this happens, remove the power cable from your modem and phone for one minute and then plug it back in.
Someone will be required for investigating further and help you out if that doesn’t solve the problem.
Spectrum TV Related Issues
While spectrum internet and TV problems are similar, you may experience sound issues or poor picture quality.
If the TV doesn’t work at all then usually there is some kind of outage. Checking your connection is a good idea but you’ll have to wait till Spectrum fixes it.
Avoid using splitters and right-angle cable adapters because they can also cause problems related to bad picture quality.
Picture quality and overall Spectrum TV service may improve by removing right angle cable adapters and splitters.
Slow Spectrum Internet
While Spectrum internet does slow down at times, Time Warner Cable subscribers can experience this weekly if not daily. If you reach out for help, they are only going to consider it slow when you are directly plugged into the modem even though 99% of the people don’t use internet like that. It’s a simple way of saying “hard luck, would you be interested in a new package?”.
Let’s look at how you can figure out the delay in your Spectrum Internet.
Restarting your router is the first step as many slowdowns can be fixed by doing so. Be sure to check if the issue is just with the device you are using or all of them. If it is local to just one, simply restart that device.
Location also plays an important role as internet usually slows down if the router is kept at a significant distance or if there are multiple floors and walls between the router and you.
If you are experiencing a slow internet connection apart from the above mentioned scenarios then the problem might be from Spectrum’s end. Your speed can be checked using Speedtest.net and it should be near to what is being offered to you.
If it is slow for a significant amount of time and someone from Spectrum is also unable to figure out the problem, then it could be an issue related to the line that’s coming to your house. Keep calling them and simply keep on asking for a new line and they will eventually have to replace it. They will also cover the installation cost most of the time if the line is outside your house.
It might also be possible that you have slow internet plan. In such cases, ask for all the deals that are available and switch to a plan that is fast and reasonable.
Spectrum DVR Related Issues
Subscribers frequently complain about problems related to Spectrum DVR. These include DVR skipping recordings, freezing and other problems that stop you from viewing.
Power cycling and deleting the videos are two major solutions for Spectrum DVR problems. Remove the power cable from the DVR for one minute and then plug it back in.
Poor DVR software can also cause many other problems especially when more than 50% of its storage is full. Deleting old movies and TV shows may fix these issues.
Call and ask for a new DVR model if you are using an older one, however, the problem may persist even after that.
Spectrum Digital Adapter Issues
You have to buy a Spectrum Digital Adapter for TVs that don’t have a full-size cable box or DVR attached to them. These small adapters are the worst way of watching TV and are also very buggy.
Remove the power cable from your Spectrum Digital Adapter for one minute and then plug it back in. The problem should get fixed for 28 hours at least. You’ll have to reboot it again after that.
Doing so will fix the sound and vidoe output which breaks often on these clumsy small boxes. A universal remote cannot be used with Spectrum Digital Adapters and there is no fix for the default remote to work correctly.
Instead of paying $3 to $5 a month for a box that offers only a handful of channels and breaks often, go for an actual cable box deal or switch to Direct TV.
